BOXING DAY Run 1487 - Sunday 26th December 2010

The democratic process at Run 1486 decided upon the timing of the Boxing Day run – i.e. Jock told us that it should be at 10:00 (a.m.)

Location is Kgale Siding, where the No 1 Ladies Opera House is. For those of you who don' know where that is – head South from the Game Roundabout as though you were going to Lobatse (or anywhere else south of Gaborone). About 2.5km after the roundabout there is a turn to the left, marked St Joseph's college and Kgale Siding. There will be a hash sign there. Follow that road, past the entrance to the school and on over the railway. The road bears right, and about 500m further you will find the opera house. Our house is the one on the other side of the office gates.

We'll aim to start the run at 10:00 and you can bring and braai afterwards – probably best to bring something to sit on for that. For the run itself bring a hat and some water. We will make a tour of this side of the dam, so it is a bush run. There is a "pleasantly refreshing" pool here should you wish to bring your bathing kit.

Coming from Nelson Mandela going north turn right at the Breweries (or left if you are coming from the airport direction).  Straight at the next set of lights, straight at the circle, first left - sign for Broadhurst School.  Continue until you come to the school on the right and a big car park and shops on the left and you are there.

Thursday 7 October 2010

Run 1476: Sunday 10th October @ 10am: Big 5 Lodge

This week's hash will be from Ladyboy's temporary digs at the Big 5 Lodge in Mogoditshane.
Hash drinks will be cut off after the circle, in favor of wetting your whistle at the Big 5 bar.  You can also have lunch there if you so desire.

The following instructions rely on you getting to the Western Bypass:

From the Rainbow School roundabout, travel to Mogoditshane on the Gabane/Kanye road.
Turn right into Mogoditshane at the traffic light that is clearly marked with a large billboard saying "BIG 5 LODGE" (there are a number of informal stalls/vendors at this particular traffic light, as well as plenty of goats, usually)
Head straight along this TARRED ROAD until you see the big thatched lodge on your LEFT.

The following directions may sound more complicated than you are expecting, which is due to the fact that the Molepolole Road going through Mogoditshane at present is under construction and a general NIGHTMARE all around.  If you want to save yourself the hassle, see the directions above.

From the old Molapo Crossing Roundabout (which is now a 4-way traffic lighted intersection on the Western Bypass):
Head west to Molepolole, passing the turnoff to Grand Palm and continue straight ahead on the shiny new blacktop.
At the GABORONE INSTITUTE OF PROFESSIONAL STUDIES (GIPS) intersection (GIPS will be on your right), stop at the stopsign and then (bear with me here) turn LEFT.
YES, I KNOW, there is no official road here!.  Still, turn LEFT onto the new road construction (part tar/part gravel) for a few metres, and then onto the dirt road on your left.
Travel along this dirt road (through the backs of some houses) until it pops you out at a 4-way-stop about 20-30m later.
Straight through the 4-way stop until you hit a T-Junction at which point you will turn RIGHT and see the thatched roofing of the Big 5 on your left.

Coming from Nelson Mandela, turn into Khama Crescent. Pass President's Drive, then the road to State House and then take the next left into Makgadikgadi.  Enter the circle and take the first turn left and then about 100m on turn right. The house is the first gate on your right.

Early birds can park inside the compund but there is no parking allowed in the street outside so latecomers can park in Mookla - the second exit from  the traffic cicle.  The hare says - do not allow the guard at the gate to turn you away if there is space inside - apparently, about 10-15 vehicles can park inside).

See the map below from Google  - which thinks we drive on the right in Botswana, so don't go the wrong way round the traffic circle! This is also an old map as North Ring road does not go through to Khama (but it at least gives you an idea where the start is)

Definition of a Bring and Braai

Afterwards there will be a bring and braai- could some of the hashers also bring a braai as there is only one. For those not initiated in the local languages: Braai: (noun):  a ritual of cremating meat on a fire, seen as a social custom or rite of passage in southern african tribes (verb): to cremate meat on a fire with the intention of eating it; to socialise in a charcoal smoke environment. (like a barbeque, but with real meat or chicken, not a burger patty)

Hashmas 26th June

Just a reminder to all Hashers about the Hashmas on 26 June .

For those of you new to hashing, this is a celebration of Christmas in the middle of the year, so that all those northerners used to a white Christmas, as opposed to the White Hot variety experienced in Gaborone, can eat traditional Christmas fare, and sit around a fire.

It starts with a run in the afternoon, and the hares for this year's run have promised to provide an extra special run/walk which will be fun and festive to boot. This will be followed by the usual festivities - and who knows, maybe Santa and his hot helper will make an appearance to all those who have been good ( and maybe especially for all those who have not).

We do need to know numbers, so please sign in on the boards and give your money (80 Pula - because the best things in life maybe be free, but the dinner beforehand DOES cost money) to the Ripper, when she comes back.

Run: Sunday 13th June, 10:00 at Gaborone North

Hares: Springcocks and Stroppy
The run will be in the Gaborone North area

Directions:
Cruise on up the A1 as if going to Phakalane. At the turn off to Phakalane - decide against going to the Boulevard Bar at 09:45 on a Sunday morning, and rather not turn right, but instead carry straight on up the A1 towards Francistown. At the very next opportunity, turn left off the A1 - and follow the hash signs. (and yes I said 09:45 so that the hash can start at 10:00 promptly)

Time 10:00

Hash Run 1458: Sun 6th June @ 10 Am - Potjie on-after

Directions are as follows:

From the Rainbow School roundabout on the Western Bypass, follow the Kanye Road west (in the direction of Mogoditshane/Gabane/Kumakwane/Kanye).  Do NOT take the first right-hand turnoff to Gabane (signposted about 9km from the Rainbow roundabout), but rather continue on for another 2.5km, underneath the big power line, and turn RIGHT just after a small red-brick church with a blue roof, onto a gravel road with a Water Utilities sign indicating "Gabane Balance Reservoir", as well as a mob of signs indicating "Thatch Houses for Rent",  "Thank You for Not Littering",  "Gabane Pottery",  "Pelegano Art Village", etc, etc, etc.

Follow this gravel road around the bend about 300m (you will see another green "Gabane" sign on  your left as you follow it, and turn into the 2nd signposted gravel driveway on your right marked "Ditlhareng - The Taylors".  If you come to Pelegano Art/Craft Village you have gone too far! Proceed to the glorified-cattle-fence security gate where you will (hopefully) be waved in.  Continue into the neighbourhood and bear LEFT, follow the avenue of prickly pear cacti, over a violent speed bump (or 3), continuing UP the hill (do not take any left-hand turns or pull into anyone else's driveways), past a small white trailer on the right, and proceeding straight ahead, all the way to the top, as far as you can go.  The road dead-ends into a 2-story stone house with a thatch roof and salmon-colored paint job.

Instructions for On-After:

After last week's "Arctic Blast Hash", we decided to well and truly EMBRACE the winter season, and rather than have the same ol' same ol' bring and braai, you are invited to make your best winter stew potjie (our guess is you'll either want to pre-make or par-make it the night before) and bring it along for the On-After.  A fine bed of coals will be prepared prior to the hash, and the pots can be simmering away under the watchful eye of Jock while the hash is being run.  After the circle everyone can sample one anothers' best efforts at winter stewing!

If you do not own a potjie or have no idea what the previous paragraph means, do not fear, simply bring your own french bread or baguette (or 2) and you are more than welcome to taste it all and get a valuable first-hand lesson in southern African cuisine at its best!   Please bring your own dishes & cutlery & chairs, alternatively there will be plenty of large rocks & boulders to sit on if you don't.

Please email kalahari.hash@gmail.com if you will be joining us so that we can make a plan for
A) Parking, and
B) How much bread pudding Jock is making.
Also if possible let us know if you will be bringing a pot or bread, for the sake of planning.

Sunday 9th May – Gaborone Dam City Scapes - 10.00Am

Sunday's run is from Gaborone Dam City Scapes starting at 10.00a.m

For those you of not too familiar with Gaborone - directions as follows: from the Mosque Circle on Gaborone Sun Road, drive past the University on your left to traffic lights (robots). Go straight at lights to next circle (Tlokweng Circle). Go straight at this circle until the road just before the Toyota Showroom. Turn left at this road following directions to Sanitas which is signposted.  Take next turning to the left onto what is probably a very muddy dirt road and follow the road around to the right. Then drive about 600m and go straight past the first right which goes to Sanitas. There should be a Hash sign at this point. (If you get to Sanitas you have gone wrong).     Travel a further 1300 meters along the dirt road, past a workshop, you will see the dam wall on the right, stop at the boom; (NOTE there is a charge of 20 Pula per person at the boom, however I am sure that everyone will enjoy the outing)

Note, if at this time, your car is full of water, you are on the wrong side of the dam wall :  go back and start again.

1800 meters further will find you at the end of the wall and a sharp turn right for a further 1300 meters and right again into the rather run down City Scapes Public Resort where there will be a hash sign.

For those who are not aware of the area, the good gravel road continues for some distance past the venue, however the side roads then onto the dam edge are often very rough and please watch out for the animals, this makes for a nice outing at any time, however there is no way out other then the way in, through the boom.

You can also park at the boom and walk up steps to the top of the wall and overlook the dam.

There is a bring and braai afterwards, stay and enjoy the day

PLEASE REMEMBER:there is an entry charge of 20 Pula per person at the boom

If you get lost, call Derick on 72704473.

Gaborone City Marathon/10/4 - Sunday 18th April - This week's run

Those taking part in Sunday's 10km and 4km race/walk

Please be at Phakalane Golf Club 30 mins before the start of your run i.e. 10kms should be there at 6.45 and 4kms should be there at 9.30

Organisers will be checking if you have actually turned up, possibly by contacting you on your cell phone, think that this is more likely to be for the 10km people.

Brahman (Michelle) will have the numbers for those doing the 10kms.  Her cell is 71619408. She will be in the area outside the pro shop at the Golf Club but if this is blocked off will be close to the start of the race. If you can't find her, then call her. If you are running late and the runners have lined up at the start for the 10km, she will leave your number at the information desk (assuming there is one).

I will have the numbers for the 4kms and my number is 71823874 and Seanna is helping me and her number is 71222444

Due to the fact that the people doing the 10km will have finished (they hope!) by the time the rest of us start and no suitable venue, there will not be a Hash Circle afterwards.  So any R.A. taking part please keep in mind any mis-deeds and indiscretions they might come across for the following week.

See you Sunday

Wednesday 31 March 2010

Easter Bunny Run: Sunday 4th April @ 10AM

This run will start from the vicinity of the Broadhurst Sewage Treatment Works.

The Hare (Loose End), the lascivious old goat, has declared that as it is Easter, Hashers of a female persuasion should turn up displaying ample décolletage, acres of thigh, bunny girl outfits, fishnet tights, nosebleed inducing stilettos, etc. The co-Hare (Rabbi) being of a more chaste and sober nature says just turn up a la Easter, the Harriettes can give him a kiss ‘ cuddle and the Harriers can buy him a beer.  On the run keep eyes open for abandoned Easter Eggs and orphaned Easter bunnies.

To get there find your way to Broadhurst Drive – turn right/left on Mandela at the KBL robot and head East or turn right at the Segoditshane/Boroadhurst Drive if coming from Gabs Sun and head East or turn right/left at the Denmed robot near Kagiso Mall and head east.  On all routes head East until at the point where Broadhurst Drive turns back on itself there is a new tar road heading even further East (sign posted Cemeteries).  Proceed on new tar road, past the Broadhurst cemetery on right, past the Muslim and Hindu cemeteries on right, past  BSPCA on right, past Broadhurst Sewage ponds on right (pausing to sample the beautiful aroma) and keep on (heading north at this stage) until you run out of tar road (you may have to fork left at some stage).  When you get to the Sewage Treatment Works gates look to your east for the Hash – or something.

And if all those directions are confusing, the map below should help:
