HALLOWEEN HASH (No. 1531): Monday 31 Oct, 6pm

BOO!

Given the fact that A) It's Halloween, and B) we're all melting from the cruel & unusual heat this week, it was decided on Sunday that the next Hash (1531) will be an evening Hash on the 31st, which is Monday.  Brad & Angelina will be setting a VERY SPOOKY appropriate-length hash (based on the current time of sunset) that you are REQUIRED BY LAW TO RUN IN COSTUME.  It's Halloween, folks.  Go find a mask or something!

We will convene at 6pm (PROMPTLY!)  at Cafe Rio's beer garden, in Game City (rear entrance, near the Cinemas), which will be our return destination for dinner & beverages (purchased) afterward.

Don't know how to get to Game City?  (Seriously?)  Just in case:

Take the Western Bypass to it's southernmost point, at the junction of the Lobatse Road.
Turn right at the Roundabout by Kgale Spar/Barlow world and head south towards Lobatse.
Turn right at the first (and only) robots, heading towards the Total filling station.
Turn right into the Game City shopping centre parking lot at the Total filling station.
Turn left and follow the outer road around the back of the mall, to the westernmost entrance (where shade structures are being erected and as of 4 weeks ago still had no shade cloth on them) and enter the shopping centre at the Edgars/Cinema entrance.  The Cafe Rio beer garden will be on your right as you go in the glass doors of the mall.  If you're inside the mall, it is next to Braai Place & the cinema, opposite Nandos, and diagonal from Edgars.

The good folks at Cafe Rio have asked if they could please have an indication of numbers, so would those who intend to come on Monday please reply to this email with the number of people you will be bringing - even if you're not 100% sure, try to let me know before Friday so that I can at least give them a guess.

The menu for the restaurantis attached to this email.  They have also kindly asked if we can place our orders before we head out on our run, so if you think you might be just squeaking in at 6pm exactly, please have a look now and choose your meal (you can even email it to me) with your RSVP.

Happy Haunting!

p.s. COSTUMES!!! or prepare to drink extra special Witches Brew!!!!

Hash 1526: Notwane

Hashers Hello!
This week's hash (Sunday, 25th Sept. 10:00am) will be from Ian & Sue's (but meeting at the chickens) in scenic suburban Notwane.  Their instructions are as follows:

OK, here goes:

Meet at 10:00 am opposite Tswana Pride, Impala Drive, Notwane.

Directions:

- From Game City circle, take the N1 towards Lobatse for 10.7km, then turn left at the sign to Notwane.
- After 1km, turn right into Crocodile Way
- Turn immediately right again into Impala Drive.
- Follow Impala Drive for about 1.5km until you see the Tswana Pride complex on your left (mind the speed bumps on Impala Drive).
- Park OPPOSITE the factory.

Tswana Pride is a chicken abbatoir, so if you get lost in Notwane stick your head out the window and follow the smell.

There'll be a bring & braai afterwards at our place, which is a short drive from Tswana Pride. We have braai facilities; Hashers should bring chairs etc.

Directions to the bring & braai:

- Continue past Tswana Pride. The road soon turns to dirt.
- 0.7km after the dirt starts, turn left into Noko Close.
- Follow the road to the end (it's short) and take the track on the right signposted '29B'.
- There are two gates. Those who want their groins sniffed by a truly ugly dog may take the gate on the left, but we recommend the one on the right, which leads directly to the braai place. A pool is available for those who find hypothermia appealing.

On On.

Hash No. 1525: Bull & Bush

Howdy Hashers,

Welcome back to all the Migrators who participated in this last week's (very awesome) Ostrich Migration in the scenic Waterberg mountains of RSA.  It was a real hoot, thanks to all who helped us put it together and who were able to lend us a hand with the logistics.  If you have any photos from the weekend that you would like to share, please feel free to forward them on to me (your photophile Grand Mattress) at this address so I can get them up on the website and/or our Facebook page.  There are some up on FB already, so have a look: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150288287788461.334338.187647118460&type=1#!/pages/kalahari-hash-house-harriers/187647118460.

This week's hash will be back "in town", at the Bull & Bush at 10:00am on Sunday the 18th of September.  There will be a bit of an On-After in the pub (no braai this week) post-run TO CELEBRATE LUCY'S FOURRRRRR HUNNNNDRETH HASH!!!  So stick around and make him buy you a beer or wash your car or something.

Directions are as follows:
Coming from the Western Bypass, turn east at the BTV roundabout, heading toward Nelson Mandela road, over the railway flyover, and turn left between the flyover and the Nelson Mandela intersection onto a gravel road that takes you right to the Bull N Bush's door.

Coming from the Gabs Sun/University of Botswana or The Village, take Chuma Road north, to the Chuma/Nyerere Dr. Intersection (robots, flats) and turn left onto Julius Nyerere Dr.  Continue straight for just less than 2km until you get to the intersection with Nelson Mandela (robots) where you turn right onto Nelson Mandela. Once on Nelson Mandela, take your first left (dirt road) and follow it past the Police housing straight to the Bull N Bush.

NB:  We'll have some new bodies joining this weekend, so be on the lookout for anyone looking lost or stray.

Hash 1521: Matsieng Footprints run Sunday 21st August 2011

This week's hash is another creative brainchild of Rock Dassie, and will be taking us northwards to another local archaeological wonder of Botswana.  It's the Matsieng Footprints, and you're sure to come away not only fitter, but smarter.  HA!

Run will consist of;

Meet at 10h00 at site (refer directions)

Circle up after a short run/walk, in enclosure and then followed by a bring and braai (so, bring your stuff).

Hashers wanting to see the footprints can go in groups +- 8 people.

ANTICIPATED small contribution for everyone 'running' +- 5 pula per person irrespective, for staff

Please DO NOT wander to the foot prints without the guide as they anticipate just a nominal payment and give a short history on the footprints so is well worth it

Payment to the guide, suggested at +- 100 pula per group (10 -15 pula per person)

Should a guide approach you at the gate, advise them you are part of the group.

Directions:

Head out on the Francistown A1 road;

28 km from the Phakalane traffic lights and immediately after the double carriageway ends (goes into two way road) turn RIGHT at sign that says 'Matsieng Footprints'.

Through small gate (close after you) onto dirt road for +- 2 km to the site

Follow to K3H signs from start of dirt road (sandy but OK).

Hash No. 1520: Kgale Siding

After a successful 2nd Annual Potjie cookoff last weekend, it's back to basics - by the way, make sure you congratulate The Ripper on her First Place "whatever you find in the fridge potjie" finisher - we were going to award the winner with all the leftovers to take home, but there were none!  It was all THAT GOOD!   So anyway, this week's hash (Sunday, the 14th at 10:00am) will be from sunny Kgale Siding, followed by a bring & braai.  Instructions are as follows:

Head South on Lobatse Rd from Game Circle. After a couple of kms, just after you see the BTC Satellite dishes on the left, take the turning left to Kgale Siding (a K3H sign will mark this turning). Follow the road past St Joseph's school, bear right over the railway line, then follow the road as it bends left and then straight on to the Kgale siding offices, where you can park. For those who know the No 1 Ladies Opera house; we are the double story house just beyond that.

The run will be through bush in the dam compound, so don't wear carpet slippers or flip flops.

See you sunday!

Hash No. 1519 - Gabane, Potjie Run!!

Hashers....
Winter is about to leave us in its tiny wake, so before it gets too hot for hearty home-cooked stew-like-stuff, we will have the 2nd Annual K3H Potjie Run at Brangelina's on Sunday the 7th, 10:00am as usual. In Gabane.  Same place as Hash No. 1517.  If you don't remember how to get there, check the blog: http://kalaharihhh.blogspot.com/2011/07/hash-no-1516-gabane.html.

It was a big hit last year, so let's keep the same format:

Par-cook your bestest, tastiest potjie the night before, and bring it along to sit amongst the roasty toasty coals under Jock's watchful eye while we are out for the run.
Those non-potjie-inclined types are more than welcome to feast with us for the on-after, just bring along a baguette/french loaf/hunk of bread to share, instead.  Don't forget your normal braai paraphenalia such as plates, utensils and chairs if you have them.
Upon sampling everybody's contribution, a credible judge will be selected to tell us who the King or Queen of the Hash Potjie is for 2011.  (Fair warning, the "credible judge" might be one of the Brangelina hounds. It will depend upon who is the most sober).

Last year we had a wide variety of potjielicious offerings including Mary Poppins & Cat Lady's strong chorizo & chick pea concoction, Brad's award-winning oxtail masterpiece, and others that were all so delicious that they run together in one's memory like a whirlpool of culinary extacy!  Here's to another round of stew-tastic On-Afters!

See you sunday!

Take the second street to the right (on your left will be the Toddlers Academy).
Then take the first to the left (Xaboo) and continue to the end till the T junction (on your right at the corner there is a Chuch).
Turn left at this T-junction.

Directions are as follows:

Take this dirt road appx. 300m and turn right, at the sign indicating "Ditlhareng - The Taylors".  We will meet just outside the security gate on the flat rock, as usual.
On-On!

Hash No. 1513 - HASHMAS

This week's Hash is HASHMAS and will be on SATURDAY the 25th of June, as you have been so kindly reminded 10,000 times by your esteemed Grand Mattress over the past months....
Those of you who have signed up and paid will be following the instructions as such:

Take the Molepolole Road west toward Bokamoso Hospital, through Mogoditshane. Once through Mogoditshane, at the robot just before you see the hospital, you will see a sign (on your left) saying "Camel Inn". If you get to Bokamoso Hospital, you have gone too far.
Turn RIGHT at this junction (as the "Camel Inn" sign indicates) and proceed along this tar road for a kilometre or so until you see the thatched roofing of the Camel Inn Lodge on your right. Turn right (on the cement-block-paving) into the lodge parking (overflow parking in front of the entrance gate/wall).  Hash signs will be in place.

DON'T FORGET TO DON YOUR BRIGHTEST RED FESTIVE HOLIDAY APPARELL!!!  THOSE APPEARING TO *NOT* BE DECKED OUT IN THEIR YULETIDE BEST WILL BE SEVERELY PUNISHED!  (or PUNCHED, depending on the demeanor of the R.A. on the day!!)

The run will commence at 3:30pm.   Those of you who have booked & paid for chalets are welcome to arrive a bit earlier to get your room assignments and settle in.
After the run, the circle will be held, mulled wine will be drunk, and Hashmas dinner (again for those of you who have reserved and paid for your seat) will be served at 7pm.
Revelry will ensue thereafter, carols sung, beverages partaken of, and christmas cake devoured!
The liver run will be held Sunday morning at 8am, with breakfast to follow.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE NOT BOOKED AND PAID, you may still be able to join us for dinner and breakfast after the liver run on Sunday, if you let me know BEFORE SATURDAY, and pay up!   However the chalets are now sold out.  You can "pull a Casper" and park your camping vehicle in the parking lot if you wish!

Once again, Dinner = P100 and breakfast = P50.

A Merry Hashmas to all, and to all a good Hash!
Brad.

P.S.  Anyone attending on Saturday who has a decent sound system/stereo/speakers that they would be willing to bring along, please let me know!!  We are having "issues" in this department at present....

Run 1512: Sunday 19th June @ 10.00am - Gabs Game Reserve PLUS!

This week's hash will be on Sunday the 19th of June at 10:00a.m. in front of the Gaborone Game Reserve (Broadhurst).  The "PLUS" as advertised in the Subject of this email will be the annual On-After Game Reserve Picnic after the run.  Or as I like to call it, "Dining with Monkeys".

Directions to Game Reserve as follows (we will meet outside the front gate):

From Gaborone Sun/National Stadium/University of Botswana, etc:

Head north on Chuma Road (toward Broadhurst) and at the intersection of Nyerere/Segoditshane/Chuma roads where you see the "Maru Apartments", take a right onto Metsemasewa Road.

Continue on this road as it passes Maru-a-Pula school, bends to the left, and you wll see a "Gaborone Game Reserve" sign indicating that you must turn right, as well as (hopefully) K3H signs from here.

From the Western Bypass:

At the BTV Circle, head east "into town", on Seboni Road, over the railway line, and through the stop junction with Nelson Mandela Road where Seboni becomes Nyerere Drive.

Continue on Nyerere drive straight ahead approximately 3km, straight through the major stop junction with Chuma/Segoditshane and continue past Maru-a-Pula school as per the instructions above.

After the hash we will have a bring & braai/picnic inside the Game Park, so please bring your favourite picnic'ing cuisine, probably considering extra quantities because whether you like it or not, you will undoubtedly end up unintentionally sharing a portion or two with the notorious Vervet monkeys of the Gaborone Game Reserve.  The Cost of entering the Game reserve is Adults = P10 and children the age of 17 and below pay P5. If you are using your own vehicle there is an extra vehicle fee of P10, and we will share cars if there is room you can spare in yours.

Wednesday 8 June 2011

Run 1511: 12 June @ 10.00 in Gabane

This week's hash (12 June, at 10:00am) will be from the scenic mountain top dwelling of Mary Poppins & The Cat Lady in Gabane.  A bring and braai will follow, so bring your stuff & perhaps your umbrella.... you know Mary Poppins will have his!

Directions are as follows:

From the Rainbow circle on the Western Bypass, turn West onto the Kanye Road and proceed straight through Mogoditshane.

Approximately 12km down the Kanye road from Rainbow Circle, just past where the high-voltage power lines cross the road, will be the 2nd Gabane turn on your left.

It is an unpaved road and is marked by a variety of signs including "The Cattery", "Do Not Litter", "Thatched Houses for rent", "Gabane Pottery", "Pelegano Art Village", etc etc etc.  There should also be a hash sign but it might visually disappear amongst the forest of other signs, so watch out.

Turn left off of the tar and onto this dirt road and carry on for about 300m until you see a right-hand turn with a sign that says "Ditlhareng - The Taylors" (and also a hash sign). Turn right here and continue to the big flat rocks just in front of the security gate, and this is where we will meet.

Thursday 2 June 2011

Run 1510: Sunday the 5th June, 10am

Sunday's hash will be at 10am and will be located in the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport "neighbourhood".

So says Andrew the Hare anyway, in fact, here are the specifics:

"AIRPORT ROAD, THIRD TURN ON YOUR RIGHT FROM THE TRAFFIC LIGHST. THERE WILL BE THE FIRST K3H SIGN THEN THE THIRD TURN LEFT THERE WILL BE ANOTHER SIGN THEN PROCEED STRAIGHT".

(Presumably this means you are meant to turn toward the airport from the Airport junction/robots on the Western bypass, and then follow the hash signs).

So there you go.  Give your braai tongs the weekend off, find something else to do after the run.  HA! just kidding, there will be hash drinks available as usual. But that's it.

See you Sunday the 5th of June at 10:00am then!

Thursday 19 May 2011

Hash 1508: BY THE BIG TREE (Mogoditshane-ish). Sunday 22 May 10:00am

This Sunday’s hash will be a scenic run from the middle of nowhere (?) roughly west of Gabs, or as Jock puts it, "by the big tree, you know?".  10am as usual, on the 22nd.

A bring and braai will follow, but there will be literally nothing available from the start/finish point, so bring everything: chairs, skottel braais, tongs, plates, the whole 9 yards.

Directions from Gaborone:

·                From the BTV Circle on the Western Bypass, turn west in the direction of Mogoditshane/Mmopane/Kanye

·                Drive just less than 2km to the large intersection with robots at Pula Spar/BP filling station, which will be on your left.

·                Drive straight through the robot (stopping if it's red, of course) and take the first right you come to that is a TARRED ROAD (about 600m from the robot).

·                Continue approximately 2km on this tar road, passing a school, then a shop/bar, butcher, etc. along the way.

·                The tar will then end, and turn into a dirt road which bends around to the left (toward Mmopane, or the Airport for those of you geographically in the know)

·                Follow this left-leaning dirt road until you see the K3H sign directing you to the right and to "the tree".

Thursday 12 May 2011

Hash No. 1506 - Sunday 8th May @10AM - Gaborone Cricket Club

Celebrate Mothers' Day with a lovely autumn hash from the Gaborone Cricket Club (near the UB Stadium and Gaborone Sun Hotel) to be followed by drinks & revelry alongside the Championship Finals of Cricket (...or some such ICC World Cricket League Division Seven playoffs thingie - we're not really sure, but we plan on finding out in person on Sunday!).  Food and drinks will be on sale at the event in the Cricket Club bar, after the run.

From anywhere in town, travel towards University of Botswana/Gaborone Sun/National Stadium, which are all along Chuma Road - the Cricket club is roughly between the National stadium/UB Stadium/back of the golf course. Hash Signs should be there to guide you from the Stadium area.

But, more specifically:

- If you are travelling North along Chuma Road from the UB Campus/Riverwalk side of town, take a right at the "Mosque roundabout" (the mosque on your left and the National Stadium on your right) as if heading to the National Stadium.

- Turn left immediately after the Stadium and follow the dirt road around past tennis courts and softball diamonds until you reach the Cricket Club.

Should you require better instructions than that, there is a map located here:  http://wikimapia.org/917980/Gaborone-Cricket-Club.

This week's run will be on Sunday 24th April at 10am. It will be held at Iketlo Lodge in Kumakwane and should be a good bush run (no pressure on our hares). Also a good opportunity to run off any indulgences brought by the Easter Bunny.

This is the same venue as Hashmas last June.

Go down the Western Bypass (A1) towards Game City.
At the Rainbow School Circle turn right.
Drive past Gabane.
Iketlo Lodge is on your left approximately 20km from Rainbow Circle.

After the hash and the hash circle, drinks and lunch will be able for purchase from the bar at the Lodge.

Walk 1496: Sunday 27th February: Mogonye Gorge

This week is a departure from our normal hash run/walk. It will be a picnic in Mogonye Gorge. Please note that there are entrance fees payable to enter the gorge but it is well worth it. The fees for adults are P25 (citizens), P30 (residents) and P50 (non-citizens). Children 10-14years pay half-price and those under 10 are not charged.

There are two options for meeting for this walk:

The first meeting point will be outside Kgale Spar and will depart at 09h45 sharp. Those who wish to share transport at this point can do so.
The alternative is to drive to the second meeting point where we will meet at 10h30 which will give those who met at Kgale Spar time to get there.

To get to the second meeting point, proceed as follows:

  • Take the Mokolodi Road towards Lobatse and drive to the Ramotswa Crossroad (+/- 25km from Game City).
  • Turn right (Boatle) on main tarred road for approximately 15km to a signed tarred road to Mogonye Village. There is a also a sign 'Mogone Gorges' at this point.
  • Turn left at this sign.
  • Proceed for about 5km on this good tarred road. Do NOT turn at the next 'Mogonye Gorges' sign but proceed straight for about 1km to the Kgotla parking area which is the second meeting point.

We can then board the more rugged of our vehicles for the 5 km drive on rough road to the gorge parking area.
Thereafter, we will proceed on foot for a further 1 - 1.5 km along reasonable foot paths to a suitable picnic area. There are no braai facilities, so take a picnic meal, if so desired. Please ensure that you bring sufficient beverages with you - either bring your own or stock up on hash brew in the parking lot.

The more adventurous can then proceed further up the gorge, swim in the pools, go mad, etc, later.

And most importantly: What goes in must come out! The only thing we are leaving behind are our footprints.

Run 1493: Sunday 6th Feb at 9.30am in Village

This week's run will be on Sunday 6th February at 9.30am.
The Authorities have, in their wisdom, blocked all roads to the Village except two. We can therefore have the Hash on Sunday unless the Authorities discover that the Village is still accessible and block them too.
This will be a bring-and-braai on Plot 5302. There will be braai stands with burning charcoal but bring everything else. The number of available chairs and tables are limited, so please bring that too. The run will be a mixture of bush and roads.
If you come from the North:
1.      Main road going south past the Gaborone Sun, Golf Club, Stadium and University until you find the main road blocked at Jawara Road. You are now at the south-west corner of the University area.
2.      Turn left at 3-way stop (used to be traffic lights) and then right at the next traffic lights (by the University main entrance). Then you are driving on Bushbuck Road which ends in a T-junction.
3.      Turn left there into Maratadiba Road which is the main road through the Village. Follow road to the Village Magistrate Court (huge red brick building on your right hand side).
4.      Turn right just after the Court into Kgwebe Road. Turn left where you can and Plot 5302 is third plot on the right hand side – brown gate, yellow wall, number clearly marked.

If you come from any other direction:
1.      Find Riverwalk, simplest from the ruins of Tlokweng circle.
2.      Turn left at traffic lights outside Riverwalk into Shashe South Road and drive up to fuel station/Gym Active traffic lights.
3.      Turn left into Maratadiba Road and immediately left again into Kgwebe Road. Plot 5302 is fifth plot on your left hand side -  brown gate, yellow wall, number clearly marked.

(If you happen to come from Tlokweng, still find Riverwalk and turn right, or use the old Tlokweng backroad to Gym Active).

Run 1490: Monday 17th January @ 6pm

The next run will be held on Monday 17th January at 6pm sharp in Mokolodi Village.

Directions from your esteemed hares follow:
Travel south from Game City circle on A1 Lobatse Road past Telecoms earth station and take first (and only) road to the right.  Note this turning is about 7km from Game City and is the road to Mokolodi Village.  Do NOT proceed to the Mokolodi Nature Reserve turn off which is about 3km further south.

Then travel on narrow tar road for 3kms.  When tar ends take the right fork and travel for around 500m.  Take the second small dirt road to the right and you will have somehow found the start of the K3H run.

Once you leave the main road, beware of hostile dish drains, potholes, cattle, goats, donkeys, chacma baboons, and irresponsible truck drivers.  Large rock pythons and leopards also occur occasionally on this road but you’ll only see them on the way home (after a couple of beers).

This will be a bush run so leave your sandals at home but (as if I need mention it), don’t forget your sense of humour. See you on Monday.
